Folklore Costume Books

I've taken 2 books out of the library about costume within folklore tradition:

- "A Modern British Folklore Portrait: Arcadia Britannica" by Henry Bourne
- "Wilder Mann: The Image of the Savage" by Charles Freger

WILDER MANN

This book is a collection of an ongoing project by photographer Charles Freger photographing European century old rituals which celebrate the cycle of life and the seasons. Their costumes are made from animal skins or plants and decorated with bells, bones, horns, hay, antlers, cloth etc.

"The transformation of human to beast is a central aspect in pagan rituals passed down over the centuries that celebrate the turn of the seasons, fertility, life and death – some still alive today in carnival or Advent traditions."

The back of the book explains each of the characters from the different customs and countries around Europe.

ARCADIA BRITANNICA

Portraiture project documenting British folklore traditions through costume
"Founded on pagan Celtic, Germanic and early Christian roots, British folklore – far from being a quaint anachronism – is thriving, and remains vibrant and relevant by adapting to new circumstances, with the ‘folk’ (people), and the ‘lore’ (stories) continually informing and influencing each other"

Researching these costumes is fascinating I love the eccentricities and craft of them. As these costumes are all related to existing folklore and tales and characters, and because I'm writing my own, I'm not quite sure how to link this research to my practical yet.
I think I'm going to do some drawings of these costumes and maybe take influence from their forms and characters as a basis to create my own folklore characters so that my stories are rooted in actual folk history maybe??
Could I imagine my tales existing within ancient customs - could I create characters to be celebrated that I could imagine people making costumes about? Could I make costumes???
So many things I want to make

how can i make this link?
