composition - three elements painting

I think Edward Hopper's sketchbooks are fascinating, you can see his thought process and notes and influences as he plans out his compositions in these beautiful sketches.

This is a new way of working for me, usually I don't consider the composition in as much detail and more on the elements within the piece, so to actually spend time fiddling around with the placement of the different elements was really beneficial and gave me time to reflect on what was working and what wasn't before I jumped into the painting which I do sometimes too quickly.
Visually I like this painting because of the colours and the outlined elements of the bottle, but reflecting back on this painting I think compositionally it may be too boring / uninspiring? I think the elements are all too similar in size, theres no real foreground, midground background.
All in all a fun task, I'll definitely keep exhaustively making roughs before jumping straight in, it really does help the finished piece.

NOTAN

I gave notan a go after our playbook session about value and it was so satisfying. It's a really simple way of making interesting compositions quickly. I'm a hoarder when it comes to scraps from collages, this way of working is a really interesting way of making use of the otherwise discarded and bring it into the work.
Nice nice would recommend to a friend
