This trip was really beneficial, usually when going around an art gallery I'm drawn to things because I like them, I rarely consider WHY I like them in terms of composition/value/line of sight, because these are things we don't necessarily consciously think of, yet are usually the reason we find things visually appealing? It was interesting to spend time looking at these paintings that I'd studied before but in a new light and understanding the technical techniques used to create a great painting. The handouts we've been looking at have been a bit confusing at times because they're usually just describing a flat boring 1960s text book illustration, so it was really beneficial to then apply and understand these rules in the context of classic paintings.
This is one of my favourite paintings in the gallery, I used to go and look at it all the time on my break when I worked in the gallery cafe, the colours are fab and I love the wonky hands. This wall in the gallery of a variety of paintings is really special, they play off each other and it was interesting to look at his group in relation to the compositional rules.
