my final little book for my market project!
proud of myself for managing to finish it when I only had 4 days to make it because I took on too much yet again:( but i do wish I'd had longer because this really was a passion project, I find the market so fascinating and like a sensory overload and being able to make this thing for me was such a breath of fresh air after a stressful couple of months. I might continue this project into the Summer as I enjoyed it so much, I was talking whoever runs the Leeds Market instagram page about making some of the illustrations into postcards which would be really cool!
If i was to do this project again I would definitely give myself more time to indulge in it and really enjoy the process rather than feeling so much time pressure. I also think I need way more practice and time to improve my colour use especially in my paintings as i think these are some of the weaker pages. It wouldve been nice to have used printmaking some more too and to have made some of the pages into screenprints etc! I think it would be interesting to include more history and conversation within the book and try interviewing market stall owners and customers and get a rounded picture of the community within Kirkgate Market.
I hadn't tried coptic stitch binding before this book but it was actually much simpler than I thought it would be and I'll definitely use it again, I love how you can add a separate hard cover and see the stitching as well as the book being able to lay flat!
As beneficial as doing the commissions during 504 have been, I feel as though I have missed out quite a lot by doing my 504 this way rather than one long extended project which I could have really dug my teeth into and done some indepth research and development for, this is something I think I've been craving and missing during my projects as theyve all been quite quick and stressful turnarounds. For my own mental health and wellbeing, making art for myself is very important and this module has definitely reaffirmed that. I need a nap.
I'm going to make a few more editions of the book next week to try and sell at Print Stuff on Sunday!
