Summative Report
This module has been extremely challenging in terms of time management but I have no one to blame but myself! I definitely took on more projects than I should have done. Despite this I think it was a good learning curve as each one has taught me something new and the skills I was learning I would transfer into the next project. My digital skills have definitely improved a lot throughout. Its also enabled me to build up a portfolio of work that exists in a professional context. I think my confidence has been knocked quite a lot during this module, its been a vicious cycle as I didn't have enough time for each project meaning I had to produce work in short amounts of time which left me feeling frustrated and dissatisfied with my outcomes at times. Despite this my favourite outcome of this module was the one I had the least amount of time to complete, my Kirkgate Market project. This project enabled me to completely indulge in something I'm really interested in and make work for myself rather than other people like the rest of the module. This is a shame because if the commissions fell at different times I wouldve been able to really dive into the market project and do more research and make more outcomes. If I was to do it again I wouldve loved to have got some conversations going and to have interviewed people in the market and created a well rounded picture of the community that exists in that space. I found researching the history fascinating and it really gave me an appreciation for the market, I included some of this history in my book, but given more time I wouldve loved to have delved deeper to provide the viewers of my book with more information and stories. I think my book has achieved the outcome I wanted it to, to celebrate the market and therefore encourage people to visit. This is especially important in a world increasingly swallowed by globalisation and it would be such a shame to lose these historical institutions to huge supermarket brands. I could further apply the work I did for this module into a small advertising campaign encouraging people to keep using the market! The animation was definitely the most time consuming portion of the module, a very very long 2 weeks. There were times when I didn't think I would be able to finish it in time so I'm really proud of myself that I pushed through these doubt and persevered. For a first animation attempt I'm pleased with what I've produced however I will definitely strive to create a more professional outcome if I take on future animation projects. Looking back I'm not that pleased with any of the work I made during SB1, it doesn't feel very professional or very 'me'. My work during this module has definitely improved as it went on, I think I produced my best work in the last project (The Market). Going into Summer I am excited to take a step back from working on commissions and concentrate on myself and what I want to make. This is really important for me going into Level 6 as I want to feel confident in myself as an image maker and confident in the places and contexts I want my work to sit in. To achieve this I need to spend some time on me and learn to say no. My biggest regret is the lack of time I had to research contextually for each project, I think a project which runs like a COP project is always going to be engaging and fulfilling, the more rounded research the better and going into level 6 I want to set aside more time to do this. Its been a long module and I've made many mistakes but I'm proud of what I've achieved and ready for some rest.
