Nice People Magazine final image

final illustration and poster for the launch night

STRENGTHS:

- I'm pleased with the concept of this piece and trying to paint a picture of Leeds and its independent scene

- Doing this has really strengthened by digital skills I feel a lot more confident with them now

- I had a difficult week or so when creating this so I'm pleased with myself for powering through

WEAKNESSES:

- I really don't think this is any of my best work, to me it feels very scrappy and busy and I'm not sure I like it too much

- Theres something jarring about it and I think its the use of black areas like the Parkinson Building at the bottom and the bar and tree etc, I think these areas detract too much and put the image off balance

- I coloured it digitally whilst still trying to keep the analogue textures but I'm not sure it feels very me as it seems too digitally coloured if that makes sense?

- Looking back through my sketchbook I prefer my initial sketches so much more than the final outcome, I think I lost some of the visceral image making along the way which is really disappointing

Overall it was an amazing opportunity to be able to design this cover for Nice People, theyre such a lovely duo doing amazing work and I'm honoured that they trusted in me to create this.
Its been a difficult couple of weeks work wise for me, I've felt very unconfident in myself and my abilities and I put too much pressure on myself during this piece and ultimately ended up creating something I wasn't overly pleased with. If I was to do it again I think a less busy image wouldve worked better and I wouldve loved to have screenprinted a design instead. Its caused me a lot of headaches but Tom and Meg from Nice People were really happy with it so I guess thats the main thing and I should curb my self deprecation sometimes!
