Book Layout Visual Influences / Research

Remy Charlip

I adore these images.
Bravery n genius in having great ideas n being confident in executing them. The snow one is just brilliant.
Simple is so difficult to achieve but so damn great when it works

Audrey Helen Weber

I really love the way Audrey designs her books. The choice of off white stock, the short sentences which compliment but don't distract the images . The relationship between word and image . normal and strange.

Laura Carlin - Iron Man

I absolutely love this book. I go back to it all the time. Unfortunately I ordered the smaller version so I don't have the cut outs and fold out pages in my edition - but its wonderful all the same.

Laura Carlin is a genius and a massive inspiration. Charming, raw, human, intuitive work.

I love the interactivity elements in this book - theyre subtle and not used as a gimick, but rather to beautifully enhance and uplift the narrative. Could be something to consider in my book - especially for parts such as the wind woman transforming into the cape she's sewn from the wind - but I don't know how viable and doable this is considering the timeframe. Something to consider with book design in the future though.

Another thing I love is how she has a thread running through the whole book which is resolved at the end - the Iron Man is the only figure who has a shadow, until the end of the book when everybody joins him in his kindness

Peony Gent

- weaving poetry and personal experience into zines and comics and books that exist foremost to tell her own experiences, but to let the viewer in, as if inside her own stream of consciousness.
- documentation of life and existing, organising thoughts and ideas within the constraints of a certain format
- love the way she uses panels and colour restriction
